Seit dem großen Eisenbahnraub im Jahr 1962 ist im Städtchen Trouble im kalifornischen Gold Country einiges los. Unzählige Touristen strömen herbei - viele, um das Goldrausch-Museum zu besuchen, die meisten aber in der Hoffnung, die Beute aufzuspüren, die nach dem Raub spurlos verschwunden ist. Als dann der Wachmann des Museums, ein ehemaliger Cop, ermordet wird, übernehmen Monk und Natalie die Ermittlungen. Monk ist sofort von dem legendären Zugraub besessen und entdeckt eine erstaunliche Verbindung in die Vergangenheit: Zur Zeit des Goldrauschs lebte in Trouble tatsächlich ein Edelmetallprüfer namens Artemis Monk.
Natalie sticht die Ähnlichkeit der beiden sofort ins Auge: Wie Adrian war Artemis ein genialer Detektiv und litt auch unter denselben Neurosen. Aber das ist nicht das einzige Bindeglied zwischen Gegenwart und Vergangenheit. Und ehe Adrian Monk sichs versieht, muss er erfahren, wie die Stadt Trouble ihrem Namen plötzlich alle Ehre macht.
